A spicy flatbread made with chickpea and wheat flour; which is further flavoured with green chilies, coriander, onion, salt, chili and cumin. Also high in protein, it is a great addition to the healthy breakfast table. This roti is traditionally enjoyed with a fiery garlic chutney.
One of our favourite breakfast meals is the combination of this delicious besan ki roti (gramflour flatbread) with some hot lehsan ki chutney (garlic dip). This is the combination I tried after getting married but boy was I pleasantly surprised!
If like me you are skeptical about this exotic breakfast, then I urge you to give it a go once. You can easily half the recipe if it is your first time making it and you are just a small family of two.
The Besan ki Roti pairs beautifully with Lehsan ki Chutney which is a spicy garlic dip. Crushed garlic, red chili powder, salt and lemon juice are cooked in some oil until the garlic is no longer raw. Some people also add cumin to it.

Servings: rotis
Ingredients
- 2 cups gram flour
- 1 cup wheat flour
- 1 small onion finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ¾ teaspoon red chili powder
- ½ teaspoon cumin powder
- ½ teaspoon cumin seeds
- 4 tablespoon fresh coriander leaves chopped
- 1-2 green chilies chopped
- water for kneading
- ghee/oil for frying
Instructions
- Knead all the ingredients together with the help of water. The dough shouldn't be too soft or wet. Pat with some oil at the end so the dough does not stick. Let it rest for 15-20 mins.
- Make large lemon sized balls out of the dough and keep aside.
- Dust some wheat flour on your working surface and roll out the balls into a circle. If the roti sticks dust some more flour on top.
- Heat a flat pan and on medium heat place your roti on it. Flip when slightly cooked from one side and add around 2-3 tablespoons of ghee or vegetable oil. Cook both sides till golden-brown.
- Enjoy with garlic chutney!
Notes
- If your dough gets too soft you can add more wheat flour to it and adjust the seasonings accordingly.
